Who has BSL?

The below list of communities with breed specific legislation comes from Rott-n-Chatter, the oldest Rottweiler/BSL site on the web. Jan Cooper maintained the list for 20 years, and I took over for her a few years ago. The following states have laws that prohibit municipalities from passing breed specific ordinances: California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Washington. You will find, however, that some cities in those states are listed below. That’s because some states have “home rule,” which means the authority of cities and counties to act in local affairs is transferred from state law to a local charter.

With this in mind, its important to remember that regardless of where you live, BSL is a concern for all dog owners, and we should take every measure to prevent it no matter how near or far.
