Yazoo, Mississippi city alderman Aubry Brent has requested the City Board revise its animal control ordinance concerning vicious animals and, in particular, pit bulls. A petition was presented to the Board several months ago about the “presence of pit bulls within the community,” and the Board took no action on it. Alderman Brent is now pushing for action.
When I contacted the city clerk this morning, I was immediately referred to the city attorney, who confirmed the matter is under review. They are studying what action other Mississippi cities have taken against specific breeds, and will report back to the Board for their review and consideration.
Please send your polite, respectful and informative letters in opposition to breed specific legislation to the Yazoo city officials listed below. Individual e-mail contact is not available for the Board members, but may be sent to the city clerk, Shirley Knight, with a polite request to forward to each of the Aldermen. Please also send your viable alternatives and suggestions, and if you are in the Yazoo area, offer your assistance to work with the city to create a strong, breed-neutral ordinance that targets reckless dog owners.
Board meetings are held the second and fourth Monday each month at 2:00 p.m. They take place at the Yazoo City Police Department in the board room.
