In honor of National Pit Bull Awareness Month, during the entire month of October, Bless the Bullys is honoring individuals who go above and beyond for pit bulls in their communities. While some of the nominees have been hand-picked by me personally, I have also asked for public input on pit bull advocates who have inspired them. I have received some wonderful, heartfelt nominations, and I am thrilled to share their stories with you!
Today’s nomination comes to us from Sandy Oberg, as well as Debbie Jarus, and what a great story to kick off our month long salute to pit bull advocates. Without further ado, our first honoree is Chris Hughes.
“Chris is the founder of Rowdy to the Rescue, a rescue dedicated to saving pit bulls and showing the Cleveland, Ohio area (and beyond) what a wonderful breed they are. He is also a founder of Thera-Pits, a group of primarily pit bull therapy dogs that are wonderful breed ambassadors as they help children with reading problems in the Cleveland area and visit local hospitals.
Chris has rescued many pit bulls from fighting rings, those that were on euthanasia lists, and turned them into wonderful breed ambassadors and pets. His most well known dog is Gremlin. She had been used as a bait dog in a Washington D.C. fighting ring. Held for awhile as evidence, she had scars, broken legs, and her vocal chords had been permanently damaged…most likely from having a baseball bat shoved down her throat to rupture her vocal chords. Chris adopted her, and nursed her back to health. She became his first pit bull therapy dog, and they have both been spreading happiness and pit bull goodwill ever since.
Chris started working with schools and reading programs, and then Gremlin became the first pit bull accepted into University Hospital’s Pet Pals program. Since then, many more dogs have been accepted into the Thera-Pits program. Over the summer, Thera-Pits worked at a summer camp for children with autism.
Chris also volunteers with a group of adults who don super hero costumes, visiting sick children. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of a shout out for their work on behalf of pit bulls than Chris Hughes!!”
On behalf of Bless the Bullys and the National Pit Bull Awareness Campaign, thank you, Chris, for all you do! You are certainly an inspiration to us all!
