Schuyler, NE: Committee to discuss breed specific proposal 1/8/13

I spoke with the Schuyler city clerk today who advised that the Safety Committee meeting to discuss the proposed breed specific animal control ordinance which was scheduled for December 11, 2012 was cancelled because there weren’t enough council or committee members in attendance. That meeting has been rescheduled to January 8, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. While the public is encouraged to attend, you will want to call the city clerk first to ensure the meeting is going forward.

It’s important to note that the local paper, the Schuyler Sun, comes out once a week, and the news cycle runs a week behind. By the time we get the news, it’s not necessarily the latest, most up-to-date information. The last article in the Sun indicated that the ordinance had been tabled. Even though the article was published on December 12 (the day after the committee meeting was to have taken place) it was referring to the December 4 council meeting, and it would have been easy to conclude the ordinance had been tabled by the committee.

When the Safety Committee meets in January, the members will tweak the proposal in order to accommodate suggestions made by a resident. None of those suggested changes pertain to the breed specific language, which remain in the proposal.

Finally, once amended, the ordinance will be sent back to the full city council at their meeting on January 15, 2013. Please DO NOT call the clerk’s office regarding the proposed changes or the status of the ordinance until AFTER January 15, 2013.

It should be noted that no one spoke either in opposition to or in favor of the breed specific language, despite the fact that nearly a dozen breeds are singled out. The breeds targeted by the ordinance include:

American pit bull terrier,
American Staffordshire terrier,
Staffordshire bull terrier,
Dogo Argentina,
Presa Canario,
Cane Corso,
American bulldog,
Chow chow,
Doberman,
Rottweiler;
and American bandagge (American Bandogge Mastiff)

If you live in or near Schuyler, please make every effort to attend the upcoming meetings and work with city officials to find some common ground to build on and create an ordinance that benefits the entire community.

Please continue to send your polite, respectful and informative opposition to BSL to the Schuyler officials and encourage them to pursue a breed-neutral law that holds reckless dog owners accountable for the actions of their dogs, regardless of breed.
