Monticello, AR: Pit bull ordinance on Feb. 21 agenda

In December, a representative of the Humane Society of Southeast Arkansas approached the Monticello city council and requested the city ban or regulate pit bulls. Judy Barton, who is described as the “leader” of the Humane Society, advised the council that her group “knew where the problems were, and would be willing to work with the city to let them know about pit bull owners,” indicating any such ordinance would be selectively enforced.

You can read more about the proposal and the important issues that should be noted regarding the humane society’s role in this matter at our previous alert at the following link.

City officials instructed the city attorney to address the council regarding research on banning or regulating pit bulls, and have a proposal ready to present for the council’s consideration.  That draft ordinance is expected to be presented tonight, Thursday, February 21, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. at city hall.

If you are in or around the Monticello area, please make every effort to attend tonight’s council meeting.

I am in Florida and unfortunately can not attend this important meeting. Can anyone who will be there please bring up the The Maryland House of Delegates has unanimously approved a measure that would reverse a court ruling designating pit bulls as an “inherently dangerous breed.”
