Rockaway Beach, Missouri Alderman Terry Segrist presented an ordinance to the city board that would ban pit bulls in the city limits. I spoke with the city clerk on Friday afternoon regarding the proposal. While she wasn’t sure of the specifics because she left the board meeting early, she believes the ordinance would prohibit any new dogs meeting the description of “pit bull” from living in the city, but would grandfather in existing dogs under strict regulations.
The Board of Aldermen will make a decision on the proposal at their next meeting on August 12, 2013. The Board meets at 6:30 p.m. at the Community Center.
Rockaway Beach is an extremely small town of less than 1,000 people and has little to no online presence. All communication with the city will need to be done via telephone or fax. The clerk advised if you address correspondence to the Mayor and Aldermen, she will make sure each gets a copy of the same.
Because the Board will make a decision on the proposal at the next meeting, it is extremely important that you reach out to the city officials immediately with your polite, respectful and informative opposition to breed specific legislation. Please ask them to consider alternatives that would crack down on irresponsible dog owners, a move that would target the heart of the problem rather than give the community a false sense of security.
