Pope County, AR: Three cities considering pit bull ordinances

Three cities in Pope County, Arkansas are considering pit bull ordinances, and residents fighting these proposals are feeling very overwhelmed by their battle there.  I have spoken with a resident who is actively opposing all three proposals, and they need our help, support and encouragement!  They are asking for assistance in the form of educational materials and alternatives for the officials to consider and, most importantly, boots on the ground.  We need people at the upcoming council meetings.

City officials in Dardanelle, Dover and Pottsville, Arkansas are considering ordinances that target “pit bulls.”  There have been no reported incidents in any of these cities and, in fact, the only reason given for the proposal in Dardanelle is that police are seeing an “increase in criminals using vicious dogs, especially pit bulls” to guard drug houses.  Instead of targeting the root of the problem, the city is attempting to control the criminal element by targeting and punishing all owners of a specific breed of dog – the good and the bad.

In addition, its important to note that Russellville, the county seat and the largest city in Pope County, has a breed specific ordinance in place which officials are using as an example.

Please send your polite, respectful and informative opposition to breed specific legislation to the city officials listed below.  Links containing background and additional information are available for Dardanelle and Dover.  We’ve seen no news reports generated for the proposed ordinance in Pottsville.
