Highland Park Mayor Michael Belsky called for a citywide ban on pit bulls today, three days after a 14-year-old girl was bitten on the face and arm.

Mayor Belsky stated:
“These are mercurial dogs, they are unpredictable and they are lethal,” Belsky said. “I think we need to lead by example here, and maybe other communities will follow suit and create a groundswell, like the smoking ban.”

Belsky had already been working with state legislators and several concerned residents about amending Illinois law so that the home rule community would be able to prohibit breeds, he said.

One response to “BSL ALERT — Highland Park, Illinois

  1. I have been in touch with the city council and its mayor. One council member, Steven Mandel, is NOT in favor of banning any breed of dog, while other council members are defending Mayor Belsky’s public comments. In fact, from what my emails state, non of the council members even knew what the mayor had stated in a report from a Tribune reporter.
I hope Highland Park officials will come to their senses soon before this meeting as they are NOT aware of any proposal of banning the Pitbull at this time.
I have proposed a protest over the mayor’s outspoken words and am asking for his resignation. IF he can discriminate against a certain breed of dog due to his ignorance, than what else is he thinking?
How many of us will be at this next council meeting? Mayor Belsky’s comments have already offened many around the world.
